About
AMGA Certified Rock Guide, Certified Alpine Guide, Assistant SPI Provider
Michael started climbing in 2006 in Maryland at Towson University but didn’t find a real passion for climbing until he traveled abroad to New Zealand in 2007 for a semester of college. He met so many amazing people from all over the world that had come to New Zealand just for the climbing. This incredible community, the “climbing community”, that he became part of, fueled his fire for the sport. Once back in the states, he finished a degree in Sport Management and embarked on a mission to learn more about climbing. Michael scored a job at an East Coast climbing gym called Earth Treks’ Climbing Center in Timonium, Maryland. Working with great people and making lifelong friends in the indoor gym naturally led him to further expand onto the real stone. He took that time to embark upon a career working in the climbing industry, learning about every aspect possible. Naturally this led him to an interest in guiding. He started guiding/instructing for Earth Treks in 2010 teaching rock climbing in summer camps, introductory level outdoor climbing courses, and weekend ice climbing in the Adirondacks. Since then, Michael moved to California to pursue his passion for climbing and his professional guiding development through the AMGA. From 2013 to 2020, Michael worked at the Santa Barbara Rock Gym filling many roles such as the head route setter, head coach of the youth climbing team and lead guide. During that time Michael completed the Rock Guide certification with the AMGA in 2016 which launched his guiding career here at Sierra Mountain Guides. Currently Michael is an AMGA certified Rock Guide, certified Alpine Guide, and an Assistant SPI Provider. Michael now lives full-time in Bishop, CA guiding year round in the Rock, Ice, and Alpine disciplines. On days off he has been climbing all over California, and North America honing skills as a climber, guide, snowboarder, coffee addict and lifelong learner. You may also find Micheal at the front desk working at Sage to Summit gushing about his last adventure in the mountains or just how incredible this special place, known to mountain adventurers as the “Range of Light”, really is.
